Please find for sale 50+ fresh Zizania Aquatica seeds, better known as Wild Black Rice.  Forget the images you have in your head of the intensly cultivated paddy fields of Asia, this rice originates from the wild rice species that are natives to many parts of the world. These seeds come from a excellent supplier of organic seeds in the Ukraine.

Wild Rice has been eaten by native communites for millenia andhas a lot to be appreciated for in terms of nutrition. Like conventional rice, it is a gluten-free carbohydrate. It’s also a viable source of protein, as well as dietary fibre and amino acids. It has significant amounts of B-vitamins, as well as several minerals, such as zinc, manganese, phosphorus, and magnesium. It is also considered a high antioxidant food.

Wild Rice beds take some effort to form in wet/watterlogged areas of your garden or large ponds but once established will produce reliable harvests each season.

Sowing Guide

  • Seeds require a period of cold stratification
  • Mix the seeds with some damp compost in a ziplock bag
  • Use rainwater rather tap water wherever possible
  • Place in fridge for 8-12 weeks
  • After cold stratification spread the seeds on a pot or tray of damp compost
  • Cover with about 2cm of damp compost
  • Carry on growing in the pot - do not transplant
  • Established plants can go out into your chosen water body in spring
  • Do not remove the plants from the pot - place the entire pot under the water as you would with water-lily in a pond etc
