Growing Guide

Growing Maize in the UK requires a long season and a sunny sheltered spot. As with other corn, White Maize needs to be planted in rectangular / square blocks as the plants are air pollenated by each other.

  • Sow indoors in early Spring
  • Soak the seeds in water for a day
  • Prepare deep pots - I use individual greek yogourt pots with holes drilled in the bottom.
  • Fill with moist general purpose compost
  • Keep indoor in a warm bright spot
  • Prepare the outdoor planting area
  • Add rotted manure or fertilizer as required.
  • Plant the maize out in their final position one all risk of frost has passed
  • Soil should have some warmth to it - better a bit late than too early!
