Bolusanthus Speciosus is attractive deciduous tree which is stunning in spring when it is densely covered in drooping sprays of mauve, sweetpea-like flowers. It has a rounded crown of weeping foliage. The leaves are alternate, compound and glossy green. The bark is rough, dark brown and longitudinally fissured. The fruit is a flat, narrow pod that is borne in hanging clusters.
It can be pruned to a single stem and is very shallow rooting - ideal for bonsai.
Outdoors Bolusanthus Speciosus will tolerate light frosts so in the UK is best suited to container growing or in beds in sunny, sheltered spots in warmer parts of the country such as the South and city centres. Prefers light, well-drained soils.
Seed Germination Guide
These seeds germinate readily, but as they have very hard protective outer shells, the pre-treatment in 1) will speed up germination and reduce the chances of rot setting in before germination:
- Place the seeds in a heat proof container and pour hot (near boiling) water over them and leave them to soak for between 24 hours. Seeds that have been successfully pre treated will have swollen to around 2-3 times their previous size.
- Remove all swollen seeds as these will be damaged by further pre treatments. These seeds can be placed in a plastic bag and placed in the fridge for temporary storage.
- This hot water treatment can be repeated up to 3 times, making the water a little hotter each time.
- Sow individually spaced in pots/trays of good quality compost (ideally 50% compost and vermiculite or horticultural sand)
- Cover them with a thin layer of compost no more than 5 mm deep
- Ensure compost not dry out but is never waterlogged. Best to water from the bottom.
- Seeds usually germinates within 15-25 days at 18-22°c.
