As part of the Solanum family, Tamarillos are related to tomatoes. Unlike shop bought toms, Tamarillos are tangy and variably sweet, with a bold and complex flavor, and may be compared to kiwifruit, tomato, guava, or passion fruit. Their fruit ripens in early autumn after regular tomatoes have finished providing useful continuity of cropping.

Unlike regular tomatoes, Tamarillos are normally grown as perennials  - in colder parts grown in containers and brought inside during winter.

Germination Guide

• Soak the seeds in a cup of water for 24 hours.
• Prepare a light well draining compost mix  - ideally 50% sieved compost, 50% horticultural sand or vermiculite.
• Sow the seeds thinly and cover with about 5mm of the compost
• Ensure the compost is kept moist but not wet
• Keep at between 20-25c. 
• Seeds should germinate within 4 to 6 weeks
• Prick out and pot on as required
