Stevia (Stevia Rebaudiana) | 50+ Seeds | Organically Grown | Own Crop

Please find for sale 50+ fresh organically-grown Stevia seeds (Stevia Rebaudiana) also known as Sweetleaf. Stevia is half-hardy perennial plant known best for its sweet leaves and use as a natural sweetener. Although it is a perennial and can be overwintered on a sunny window sill, most people simly grow it as an annual. As you would expect the leaves reach maximum sweetness just before they flower in the summer - the leaves can be picked any time and used to add calorie-free sweetness to drinks etc.

Well that was fun!!!.....Stevia is easy to grow from seed but it is a bit of a pain to harvest and prepare the seeds. The plants produce pretty little flowers with the seeds forming at their base - but my timing had to be perfect to harvest the ripe seeds before their fall from the plant! It has proved very hard to separate the seeds from the "chaff" so our packets will contain both seeds and chaff but I will ensure you will get more seeds than the listed amount. Stock is limited this year but I aim to produce a lot more this season.

Germination and Planting Guide

• Please note that Stevia is notorious for naturally low germination rates - often around 15-20%. So a pack of 50 seeds is likely to produce 5-10 plants. However each plant produces a lot of usable leaves and future stock can be obtained from cuttings.
• Sow indoors in late winter or early spring
• Prepare small compartmentalised seed tray and fill with good quality moist compost mix - ideally 50/50 sieved compost and vermiculite
• Light firm and level surface
• Sow 5 or so Stevia seeds in each compartment and very light ruffle surface with a pencil so that some of the seeds are half buried - light is required for germination
• Cover tray with clingfilm with a couple of air holes cut in it
• Keep in a warm bright place but out of direct sun - ideally around 25c - so a heat mat and a grow light if you have them although a normal desk lamp can be used if not.
• Seedlings should appear in around 7 days
• Remove clingfilm a few days after seedlings appear
• Pot on to individual pots once large enough to handle
• Harden off and do not plant outside until after all risk of frost has passed.
