Once established this plant is as easy as it gets - tolerating any soil, aspect or conditions.
Please note that these berries contain alkaloids that are toxic to humans. Whilst these berries have been and used in native cultures to reduce fevers and infections, if ingested they are likely to cause vomiting & diarrhea.

As they are native to cold and challenging climates, Snowberry seeds have pretty deep dormancy and require both cold stratification and a little scarification for optimal germination rates. Stratification is a process of simulating natural conditions that the seeds must experience before germination can occur (if a seed germinates in the middle of winter it will die). In the wild, seed dormancy is usually overcome by the seed spending time in the ground through a winter period and having its hard seed coat softened up by frost and weathering action. This cold, moist period triggers the seed's embryo; its growth and subsequent expansion eventually break through the softened seed coat in its search for sun and nutrients.
Seed Germination Guide
- The fiddly bit - lightly scarify each seed by either carefully "nicking" the end of the seed or lightly sanding/ nail filing. The idea is to allow moisture to penetrate to the embryo inside
- Mix the seeds with a free draining & moist mix of compost in clear grip seal bags.
- Squeeze out excess air and place the bag in the coldest part of fridge for 8-10 weeks
- After cold stratification sow individually spaced in pots/trays of good quality compost (ideally 50% compost and vermiculite or horticultural sand)
- Barely cover them with sieved compost
- Water by misting
- Germination can take 6-8 weeks at 15-20c. Do not allow temperature to rise above 25c - so keep out of direct sunlight
