Key Benefits of Growing Bluestem in the UK:

  • Four-Season Interest: Provides structure and beauty from spring through winter, unlike many flowering plants.
  • Spectacular Colour: Offers cool blue-green tones in summer, transitioning to vibrant reds, oranges, and purples in autumn, with bleached gold for winter appeal.
  • Low Maintenance: Highly drought-tolerant once established and thrives in poor soils, reducing the need for watering or rich compost.
  • Wildlife Haven: Provides food (seeds for birds), habitat, and host plant status for various butterflies (skippers) and insects, plus nesting sites for bees.
  • Erosion Control: Its deep root system effectively binds soil, making it great for slopes and challenging areas.
  • Plant with: Late-summer perennials like Echinacea, Rudbeckia, Helenium, and Phlox for contrast.
  • Pair with: Bearded Iris, Catmint, or Lamb's Ear for a cool-toned look.
  • Placement: Excellent for perennial borders, rock gardens, xeriscapes, or as a naturalistic planting.

Sowing Guide

Sow at any time of year but they do benefit from a period of cold stratification for maximum germination
Sow seeds around 0.5cm deep of good quality seed compost mix
Place on heat mat or window sill at approx 15-20c
Germination typically takes 10-621 days.
Ventilate gradually as seedlings emerge
Do not over-water - best to water from the bottom
After the seedlings appear, place them where they can get plenty of sun and maintain a temperature of around 15°C until the seedlings are established.
If sown in Autumn or Winter, keep in posts indoors or in greenhouse etc until spring.
Pot on once large enough to handle
Plant out in final position once risk of frost has passed.
