Why grow Sea Kale?

Gourmet Blanched Shoots Spring shoots can be blanched under dark forcers, buckets, or indoors like asparagus/rhubarb to yield tender, sweet, nutty stalks.

Multi-Part Edibility    Every part of the plant is edible: thick blue-green leaves (cooked like kale), sweet honey-scented broccoli-like flower buds, edible roots, and pickled seed pods.

Nutritional & Health Value Rich in Vitamin C (historically used to prevent scurvy) and packed with antioxidants and antiseptic properties.

Low-Maintenance Perennial    thrives in poor, sandy, salt-tolerant, or free-draining soils with minimal intervention.

Pollinator & Ornamental Value    Produces dramatic mounds of grey-blue suede foliage and clusters of honey-scented white flowers that attract beneficial bees in mid-spring.

Seed Germination

Sea seeds are traditonally tricky to germinate to the seeds outer cork-like shell. In nature this outer shell protects the seeds in side and enables seeds to float away in the sea and eventually wash up somewhere new to germinate. With a few relatively simple steps, however, good germination results can bee achieved.

Remove the other shell of the seed - there are various ways this can be done but one of the easier (and safer than using a knife!) is to place the seed on a hard surface then press it with a hard solid object etc, for example a wooden spoon. Take care not to press too hard and crush the seed embryo inside.
Get several sheets of paper towel and moisten (but not soak them). Place the sheets carefully inside a zip lock bag.

Place the seeds between the layers of paper towel then seal the bag.

Place the bag in a dark cupboard at room temperature for 3 to 7 days

Check from time to time - remove and pot the seedlings as they sprout.

Take great care not to over water seedlings are prone to rotting off - best to use very free draining compost mix and always water from the bottom.

Plant out one risk of frost has passed.
