Please find for sale 1.75g+ of Heather seed pods (Calluna Vulgaris). This is the UK's native heather that gives up such stunning vistas in beautiful places such as the the moors of Scotland and the New Forest.  Heather seed pods initially contain 10-15 seeds but as the pods open the seeds fall out - nevertheless 1.75g of harvested and prepared pods will contain 100s of seeds.

Heather is grown by gardeners for its long-lasting colour providing year-round interest. It is extremely hardy, evergreen, and provides blooms from mid-summer right through Autumn and Winter. It is also beneficial for pollinators like honey bees who particularly need nectar sources at the end of the season.

Heather can be grown in the border or containers but to really thrive it needs  acidic (ericaceous) free-draining soil, similar to the conditions found in moorlands and heaths. It dislikes heavy, waterlogged soil and will not grow well in alkaline or chalky soil.

Germination Guide

As heather is native to a fairly cold parts of the country, its have some dormancy and will benefit from cold stratification for optimum germination rates. Stratification is a process of simulating natural conditions that the seeds must experience before germination can occur (if a seed germinates in the middle of winter it will die). In the wild, seed dormancy is usually overcome by the seed spending time in the ground through a winter period and having its hard seed coat softened up by frost and weathering action. This cold, moist period triggers the seed's embryo; its growth and subsequent expansion eventually break through the softened seed coat in its search for sun and nutrients

Its not as complicated as it sounds.....you can sow the seeds in trays and leave them outside over winter so nature can take its course, however most gardeners prefer to control the process themselves, reducing the risk of animals etc munching the seed.

Germination Guide

  • Sow seeds in a small tray of moist, well-draining ericaceous compost, covering them with only a very light dusting of sieved compost.
  • Place the tray inside a plastic bag and put it in the refrigerator for 6-8 weeks at around 4C.
  • Remove the tray from the fridge and place it in a warm, bright location away from direct sun.
  • Keep the compost moist.
  • Germination can take 30-60 days and may be slow or erratic.
  • Once seedlings have their second set of leaves and are large enough to handle, pot them up into individual pots.
  • Before planting outdoors, gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions over 10 days by placing them outside during the day.
  • Plant them in their final position in spring after the last frost, ensuring the soil is acidic.
