INSTRUCTIONS - TO SAVE PAPER I NO LONGER SEND OUT WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS TO CUSTOMERS. INSTRUCTIONS ARE BELOW SO PLEASE BOOKMARK THIS PAGE.

The Ruffled Fan Palm is native to the wet, humid rainforests of Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands -  so it is NOT frost hardy and as it grows under other larger palms and trees, it does not like full sun  and prefers partial or total shade. These factors of course make it idea as a houseplant as long as some humidity can be maintained.

Germination Guide

Soak the palm seeds for two days in lukewarm water changing the water daily

  • Prepare a (well cleaned) small plastic pot eg 9cm diameter
  • Fill 3/4 way up with perlite or cat litter substrate
  • Sow seeds evenly spaced and cover  5-10mm perlite or cat litter substrate

  • Place the plastic pot inside a ziplock bag  (ideally 12x17cm)
  • Fill in the ziplock bag as much tap water with a few drops of universal fertilizer (eg Baby Bio), so that after the absorption of the substrate a few mm of water remain on the bottom.
  • Close the ziplock bag
  • Further watering is not required because no moisture evaporates through the ziplock bag .
  • Place on a windowsill or in a small greenhouse in partial shade, daytime temperatures at about 25c during the day and cooler at night
  • Germination time: 45 - 60 days, patience is required!
