Firstly the seed heads can be left to provide an attractive feature over winter. Secondly the flower heads can be cut and are very popular additions to floral arrangements.

Exposure: full sun/ medium sum

Soil: Moderately fertile, free draining

Flowering period: Summer/Autumn

Propagation: seeds or rhizome division

Germination Guide 

• Sow in UK from December to April
• Use seed trays of moist well-draining compost - ideally be a well draining  50/50 mix of regular compost and vermiculite
• Sow seeds pressing lightly into (but not under) the surface
• Cover with a very fine layer of sieved compost
• Keep in a warm position at 18-22c
• Ensure compost does not try out
• Germination usually takes 2-4 weeks depending on conditions.
• Thin seedlings and pot on as required
• Plant out in final position once absolutely sure that the risk of frost has passed
