Please find for sale 250+ seeds of Red Orach (Atriplex Hortensis Rubra) seeds. Also known as Garden Orach, Saltbush, Mountain Spinach or French Spinach it is related to Amaranth which I also sell.

Perfect for UK gardens, nutritious Red Orach is much easier to grow than Spinach and less prone to bolting. The taste is also less bitter than spinach  - has a nutty and slightly salty taste making it perfect for salads, curries, stews etc. If you happen to live near the coast this is also a great option as it is a lot more tolerant of salty soils than most plants.

Germination and Planting Guide

2 Choices:

1) In Feb sow indoors or greenhouse in trays and keep in a light place, thinning and potting on as required then transplant the young plants outside once the soil has warmed and the risk of frost has gone

2) Sow directly outside where they are to grow once risk of front has gone and soil warmed. Depending on where you are in the UK this could be April-May

Orach will happily set seed from the previous year, so best to decide where you want your patch to be then all you need to do is a little weeding and thinning each year - and of course pick leaves.

Soil -  Adapts to most soils, but grows best in fertile, well-drained loam.

Position -  Full/Partial sun.

Frost tolerance - Orach seeds need warm soil to germinate and can be damaged by late frosts. Mature plants are easier to harvest after a light frost in the autumn.

Feeding - Before planting, enrich the soil with a light application of a balanced organic fertiliser or well rotted organic matter

Spacing -  Plant 30-45cm apart in rows circa 90cm apart

Thinning -  Thin directly sown seedlings to 30-45cm apart.
