Originally native to southern Africa, Kniphofia Uvaria is a popular garden plant all over the world providing both structure to a border as well and stunning vibrant colours.  The leaves are reminiscent of a lily, and the flower head can reach up to 1.52 m (5.0 ft) in height. The flowers are red, orange, and yellow. As hardy perennials in the UK, they will perform year after year with not much attention.


Growing Guide
  • Sow indoors in late winter / early spring
  • Prepare trays or pots of moist compost
  • Sow seeds at a depth of about 3mm
  • Keep tray in warm place  - 20 to 25C day time
  • Ensure compost stays moist - best to water from bottom
  • Can use plastic bag with some air holes to speed germination (but watch out for mold) 
  • Reducing the soil temperature at night aids germination
  • Germination takes 10-30 days
  • Pot on when large enough to handle into 7-9cm pots and grow in cooler conditions
  • In spring, gradually acclimatize to outdoor conditions, before planting out when all risk of frost has passed, 45-60cm apart in a sunny position
