Poor Knights Lily is endemic to the Poor Knights Islands and Taranga Island in the north of New Zealand and was only discovered in 1924 The plant is listed as vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of Plants. The common name of the plant originates from the Poor Knights Islands on which it was discovered. The islands, in turn, were so named because of their similarity in shape to the Poor Knights Pudding (aka Bread & Butter Pudding)

Germination Guide

• Sow in late winter/spring
• Sprinkle seeds onto a well draining compost in seed trays
• Compost should ideally be a 50/50 mix of regular compost and horticultural sand
• Cover seeds with a fine layer or sieved compost
• Keep moist but not wet  - best to water from the bottom by having seeds tray inside a waterproof container.
• Keep at 17-25 degrees during day and 10-15 degrees at night - so ideal place is on window sill over a radiator as long as heating goes off/down at night
• Thin seedlings and pot on as required.
• Transplant outside to final growing position once plants established

TOP TIP! Don't use all your seeds in the same tray just in case rot sets in. 

Can be grown in large pots in colder areas of the UK and brought indoor or to greenhouse during winter. In urban areas, coastal areas or the south this plant should be more than happy outside all year round.
