This is longstanding and deservedly popular easy to grow double poppy producing a steady profusion of tissue paper like double flowers in shades of pink rose and red. As with most poppies, they thrive on a certain amount of neglect (!!) and will self-seed so you should never really have to buy seeds again!

Alas Shirley is not a lady....its a suburb of Croydon where this cultivar was developed in the late 19th century by RHS Secretary, the Reverend William Wilkes//Sowing GuidePoppies thrive in moderately moist but well-drained soil in full sun and should be sown direct on to well-prepared soil. Sow in spring, early summer or autumn, where they are to flower. Prepare the soil by removing weeds and rake the ground level. Water the soil with a fine spray of water and then scatter the seed. There is no need to cover it..........and that's it!
