Please find for sale 50+ fresh Oregon Grape seeds (Mahonia Aquifolium)  - a hardy perennial shrub that is really popular in the USA but is only now growing in popularity in the UK.  

The berries are edible but sour and are mainly used to make jams and jellies (it is high in pectin) and also wine. The flowers and fruits attract butterflies, bees and birds.

Germination Guide

Oregon Grape (as it is native to areas that get cold winters) requires for optimum germination rates a period of “cold stratification” to break the natural dormancy in the seed. In nature, this stops the seed germinating in Autumn and being killed by winter frosts.

The cold stratification can be done the natural way (sow in trays in Autumn, net to keep out birds etc, and leave outside over winter) or can also be done in a controlled was as follows:

• Prepare a 50/50 mix of compost and sharp sand or vermiculite
• Ensure mix is moist but not wet (cannot squeeze out water)
• Place in ziplock bag and add mix in the seeds
• Close bag but leave a small air gap
• Place in fridge for circa 6-10 weeks
• Check seeds occasionally - if any seeds germinate, remove them and pot up 
• After cold stratification, sow any remaining unterminated seeds in trays of compost and leave in a cold frame, greenhouse or shed. 
• Pot up and pot on seedlings as required
