Please find for sale 50+  Old Man's Beard seeds (Clematis Vitalba) freshly gathered in Autumn 2023. This is a fast growing species of clematis that loves to scample over hedges, bushes or any unsightly objects that you might want to cover up! This plant gets it name from the profuse fluffy white seed heads that resemble the distiguished but slightly  unkempt beard of an elderly gentleman.

If you are looking to attract finches to your garden, this is a great plant to grow - finches love the seed heads and the plant itself provides excellent cover for them.

Germination Guide

Clematis Vitalba seeds require a period of cold stratification for optimal germination rates. This can be done the natural way - simply sow the seeds in pots and leave outside over winter, let nature take its course and the seeds will germinate in spring. Alternatively:

• Mix the seeds with some damp but not wet seed compost and place in a ziplock bag
• Place bag in the the fridge for 6 weeks (stratification)
• After stratification, sow indoors at any time about 12mm deep in trays of moist well-drained compost.
• Keep at 18-22°C
• Germination is erratic, even under ideal conditions
• Pot on seedlings when large enough to handle 
• Harden off and plant out after danger of frost has passed
• Roots/base of these plants like to be been in cool shade.
