Whilst not hardy outside all year in the UK, Natal Plum is relatively easy and unusual greenhouse plant or as a large container plant brought inside in winter.
With small glossy green leaves, and large white gloriously scented flowers, the Natal Plum looks like a citrus even though it is unrelated. The red fruits, larger than a plum are excellent in deserts, preserves etc and are rich in vitamins and minerals.
In the wild they grow in coastal areas on poor sandy soils with quite high salinity - as a result they they are really tough plants and seems to thrive on neglect! The only real need is a well draining light/sandy soil as they are prone to root rot if waterlogged.
Germination Guide
- Soak the seeds in a cup of water for 24 hours.
- Prepare a light well draining compost mix - ideally 50% sieved compost, 50% horticultural sand or vermiculite.
- Sow the seeds thinly and cover with about 5mm of the compost
- Ensure the compost is kept moist but not wet
- Keep at between 20-25c.
- Seeds should germinate within 4 to 6 weeks
- Seedlings grow slowly at first then speed up
