Mountain laurel is a flowering broadleaf evergreen shrub with a gnarly, multi-stemmed growth habit. It has beautiful spring blooms, and its elliptical, glossy deep-green leaves (resembling those of rhododendrons) and gnarled stems make it attractive in all seasons. This shade-loving shrub produces clusters of rose, pink, or white flowers with purple markings in late May to early June. Hardy in all of the UK, down to circa -10 to -15C.

Mountain laurel is particular about its soil needs, this plant is easy to grow in the right environment. It is a good flowering shrub for mass plantings in shady shrub borders, woodland gardens, or for foundation plantings. It partners well with rhododendrons and azaleas. Basically it likes the same conditions as rhododendrons and azaleas - moist but free draining ericaceous (acidic) soil. Does not like clay soils - if you have these this plant can be grown as a contianer specimen.

Germination Guide

  • For best results, these seeds benefit from cold stratification to replicate the situation in their natural environment
  • Place seeds in a small plastic bag or box, mark and place in fridge at circa 4C for 3 months
  • Prepare a compost medium - ideally 50/50 sieved compost and horticultural sand
  • Sow seeds indoors in late winter / early spring on surface of compost. Mist with water
  • Keep in light place but out of direct sun light at circa 20-25C
  • Mist surface of compost daily to ensure does not dry out.
  • Seedlings should appear in 1-3 weeks depending on conditions
