Germination & Growing Instructions
Germination Update
Been testing various ways to get optimal germination rates and times. The best way seems to be as follows. First rub off the papery covering with your fingernails so you can see what you are doing. You will clearly see that the seeds has some pronounced ridges. Files along one or more of these ridges until the creamy white inner seed is visible (but do not of course file into the white seed). One of the ridges seems to be shorter than the others and is a "weak point" - if you file this ridge you may be lucky and feel a small crack in the outer shell allowing you can easily remove most or all of the out shell. But this is not essential - the main point is to exposure the inner seed kernel to moisture. After this, soak in water for 2 days and follow instructions below.
1) Carefully nick the edge of the seed or gently file with a metal nail file along one of the ridges. The idea is to allow moisture to penetrate the seed triggering swifter germination. Be careful not to damage the seed embryo inside
2) Soak the seeds for 2 days in water
3) Sow about 3/4 inch deep in a seed tray or individual 9cm pots (two or 3 per pot)
4) Compost should ideally a mix of 50% regular compost, 50% vermiculite (which I sell in the Accessories section of my eBay shop)
5) Keep in warm, bright spot (20-25c) eg on a window sill over a radiator if you dont have a heated propagator
6) Keep moist by watering as needed but do not soak
7) Pot on to larger pots once about 8" high
8) Pots can go outside once all risk of frost has passed. Again pot on as required
9) Most important thing is good drainage in their pots - lots of crocks, holes at bottom etc)
10) Once well established and the trunk "woody" you can start harvesting a leaves at a time using common sense not to strip it bare!
11) Bring pots into conservatory or greenhouse over winter - not frost tolerant.
