You can either eat the tender, young loofah gourds - when picked fresh, the green loofah plant is slightly softer than a cucumber and slightly crispier than a zucchini. When cooked, the flavor is mild and slightly sweet. Or you can grow you own natural sponges for use in the bathroom!

Loofah gourds are pretty easy to grow in just about all of the UK - basic instructions as follows:

  • Best sown in pots in April – 2 seeds ½ inch deep per pot.
  • Keep seedlings warm (20°C) compost evenly moist – water little and often. Can be planted outside after frost risk passed.
  • Train main stem up a vertical wire or cane & pinch out growing shoot once at maximum height.
  • Pinch outside shoots 2 leaves beyond female flower (fruit swelling behind) & pinch flowerless side shoots.
  • Feed with balanced liquid fertiliser every 2 weeks once flowering.
  • Cut fruits to harvest
If you wish to grow loofas for sponges, wait until the skin is hard and just turning colour if you want a pale coloured sponge, or allow the gourd to turn brown if you want a dark-coloured sponge
