Why grow Lovage?
- Intense Flavor: Often called the "Maggi plant" due to its rich, savory aroma, a single leaf can season an entire pot of soup. It adds a deep, beefy, and savory flavor to broths, potato dishes, and sauces.
- Zero Waste: Every part of the plant is usable. Young leaves are perfect for salads and herb blends, stalks can be chopped or used as natural drinking straws, and the seeds can be dried and used as a spice.
- Hardy Perennial: It survives freezing winters and dies back to the ground, only to resprout vigorously each spring without replanting.
- High Yields: A single established plant can grow up to 6 feet tall, providing an abundant supply of fresh foliage from spring through late autumn.
- Attractive to Wildlife During mid-summer, lovage produces large, pale yellow umbel flowers that attract beneficial pollinators and beneficial insects to your garden.
- Historical & Traditional Health BenefitsLovage has long been used in herbal medicine as a natural digestive aid and is known for its anti-inflammatory and mild diuretic properties
Germination & Planting Guide
- Pre-Chilling (Stratification): Place your lovage seeds in a damp paper towel inside a sealed plastic bag and keep them in the refrigerator for 2–3 weeks. This step drastically improves germination rates.
- Sowing: Sow seeds indoors at any time of year or sow directly outdoors in spring or early autumn.
- Depth & Coverage: Plant seeds approximately 1.5cm deep and cover with a very light dusting of soil or perlite. Do not bury them too deeply, as they require some light to germinate optimally.
- Moisture & Heat: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Bottom-watering is excellent for keeping the soil hydrated without dislodging the seeds. Place the tray in a warm spot (ideally 17-23C) or use a heat mat.
- Post-Germination CareThinning: Once seedlings emerge and have about 4 true leaves, thin them out so that only the strongest seedling remains in each module or pot.
- Transplanting: If started indoors, harden the young plants off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions before transplanting into the garden after all risk of frost has passed.
- Location: Lovage thrives in deep, rich, and fairly moist soil in full sun to partial shade. Space your mature plants about 18–24 inches apart
