Why grow Lisianthus?

In a nutshell Lisianthus has most of the benefits of a rose but without all the problems!

  • Exceptional Cut Flowers: Lisianthus are famous for lasting up to two weeks in a vase, making them perfect for home-grown bouquets.
  • Stunning Aesthetics: They feature ruffled, multi-layered petals that closely resemble high-end roses or peonies.
  • Vibrant Colors: the Echo F1 mix has lovely pink, lilac, white and deep mauve
Long Bloom Time: Once established, they can continue to bloom beautifully from mid-summer straight through to the first autumn frosts.
  • Pet-Safe: Unlike true lilies or many other common ornamentals, Lisianthus is non-toxic to cats and dogs.
  • Mostly grown as a hot summer loving annual, however as British get hotter and winters milder, with care they can now be grown as perennials - either by digging up and protectingover winter, or by heavy mulching in situ depending on your location and soil.

Germination Guide
Sow Lisianthus indoors either late winter or early spring for summer flowering, or mid-autumn for early blooms the following year
Prepare a tray of good quality moist general purpose compost.
Sow seeds individually on the surface of the compost
Tamp the seeds into the compost to ensure good contact but do not cover as light needed for germination
Cover with a very light dusting of fine vermiculite
A constant temperature of 20-25c is need for germination so bes to use heated propagator or heat mat
Ensure compost remains moist but not waterlogged
Cover seed tray but have some air holes

Note: Autumn sowing is often preferred by experienced gardeners as this allows the young plants to establish strong roots as well as earlier blooms.
