This easy to grow climbing vine has been used in China and South Asia for millennia as a herbal medicine. Believed to have healing properties it is used  in tea, powder, and capsule form, the herb is said to offer anti-aging benefits and aid many common health conditions, including diabetes, high cholesterol, and anxiety.

It also contains sterols, flavonoids, and chlorophyll that may help preserve heart health, reduce inflammation, and even promote weight loss. In addition, jiaogulan is an apoptogenic herb that helps the body adapt to stress and may enhance memory, improve sports performance, and boost the immune system.

Seed Germination

I have tested the germination of these seeds before offering for sale and tried several methods. Using the "boiling water" technique, I have had very good an quick results - see picture with the first seedlings up within a week.

  • Soak seeds in tap water for 24 hours
  • Prepare a well draining compost mix - ideally 50% compost and 50% vermiculite
  • Ensure compost mix is damp but not wet
  • Place compost mix in seed tray or pots
  • Sow seeds individually, gently pressing them into the compost surface to ensure good contact
  • Cover seeds with a fine layer of vermiculite or sieved compost
  • Keep in a warm, light place at circa 17-22c but out of direct sunlight
  • Ensure compost mix does not dry out
  • Seedlings should appear in 3-4 weeks depending on conditions
  • Pot on as required
  • Do not move/plant outside until after last frost risk passed.
  • Can be brought inside and overwintered
