Sagina Subulata is a really useful and versatile plant - loved by garden designers and home gardeners alike. Its most popular use is forming a lush green mat that softens the appearance of path an border edges. As an added bonus, when in flower it provides a mass of small white flowers in the first year from sowing.


Sowing Guide
  • Can be planted direct, but as birds love the seeds, best to sow in pots
  • Sow in pots or trays indoors around 7-10 weeks (Feb/Mar) before the last frost OR from July to September for planting out the following season
  • Use a fairly fine free draining moist compost - seed compost ideal
  • Sow seeds on compost surface  - light required for germination (but NOT direct sunlight)
  • Place in a propagator or seal in a plastic bag to maintain humidity at around 17-23C
  • Water from the base of tray only. 
  • Germination takes 5-10 days approximately.
  • Remove bag once seedlings germinated to prevent mould/rot
  • Grow on in cooler conditions. 
  • Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to small pots and grow on. 
  • Harden off and plant out about 10cm apart after risk of frost has passed.
