Indian gooseberry is a popular fruit in India, and like their British cousins, are normally eaten gooseberries sweetened, or steeped in salt water and turmeric. Greenish-yellow male and female flowers are carried separately on the same branch and produce fruit which is nearly spherical, light greenish yellow, and smooth and hard in appearance. Commonly known as amla,  it is arguably one of the most important plants in various traditional and folk systems of medicine in India. 

Seed Germination

  • Soak seeds for in warm water for 24 hours. 
  • Prepare a tray of good quality compost (ideally 50% compost and vermiculite or horticultural sand.
  • Sow seeds 0.5cm and cover with a fine layer of sieved compost ,ox 
  • Place in warm place (20-25c) but out of direct sunlight
  • Ensure compost does not dry up
  • Seeds usually germinate in 4-6 weeks depending on conditions
