It is a perennial shrub native to India which normally grows to between 40-80 cm and can tolerate temperatures of between 5°C to 38°C, however it can tolerate lower temperatures down to -2°C for short periods of time. The flowers are small and green, while the ripe fruit is orange-red and has milk-coagulating properties. 

In the North or exposed parts of the UK, Ginseng should be treated as a half-hardy perennial covering in a polytunnel/cold frame growing in a container that can be brought indoors or to a greenhouse during winter. In all other parts it will grow as a perennial and some of the roots can be harvested each autumn/winter. Seeds can be collected from the berries for sowing the following season

Sowing Guide

• Sow indoors
• Soak the seeds in a glass of water for 24 hours
• Sow seed on surface of a moist porous seed mix - ideally a mix of  50% regular compost, 50% vermiculite (which I sell in the Accessories section of my eBay shop) 
• Place seeds on surface of compost, press into the surface to get good contact very gently with end of pencil then cove with a fine layer of sieved compost. 
• Place the pots in a warm area out of bright light eg on a window sill but out of direct sun 
• Seeds should germinate in 10-20 days
• Thin seedlings and pot on as required
• Plant outside in late spring once risk of frost passed and soil warmed up
