Please find for sale  10+  African Horned Cucumber seeds  (Cucumis Metuliferus), also known as Horned Melon, Kiwano, Horned Cucumber and Jelly Melon.

 These seeds have been harvested from ripe imported fruit in December so are ready for sowing in Spring. A trast and traditional fruit in Africa it also has had used in traditional medicine including for fertility.

Growing in the UK

Grow in the UK as you would for cucumbers - under glass or in a warmed sheltered spot 


Sowing Instructions

  • Sow in Spring
  • Soak seeds in a glass of warm waterr for 3 hours
  • Conitnous heat range of 18-25c need for germination - so heat mat may be required
  • Prepare a light free draining compost mix - I use 50% compost, 25% vermiculite and 25% horticultural sand
  • Ensure compost if moist but not wet - if it has been outside allow it to warm up indoors first (or microwave it)
  • Sow seeds on surface of the mix and gently press in to the surface to ensure good contact
  • Cover seeds with approx 1cm of sieved compost
  • Cover loosely with a clear bag (to maintain humidity) and keep soil temperature circa 18-25c 
  • Cool sois will significantly delay seed germination time and may inhibit germination completely. 
  • Germination takes 7-14 days
  • Slowly remove cover
  • Do not plant out until the soil has really warmed up
