Foxtail Barley, is a hardy grass species native to North America, but now naturalised in many other parts of of the globe, including the UK. Its usually grown as an annual or short-lived perennial.

It looks especially impactful when planted as a large swathe where the pale pink flowers will undulate congruously in the wind. Its easy to grow from seed and will also self-seed readily. Good for coastal gardens as it can tolerate saline conditions.

For best results grow Hordeum Jubatum in full sun and well-drained soil. Use your fingers to comb out tatty leaves or flowers, and cut back hard in spring.

Sowing Guide

Sow under cover in trays with warmth provided indoor from Feb/Apr or from May outdoors.
Seed should surface sown and lightly pressed into a moist compost mix
Placing in a clear plastic bag helps retain moisture if not in a covered heated propagator.
Germination averages 14-21 days at 20c.
Requires light to germinate
Transplant seedlings to individual pots when large enough to handle and gradually harden off
Plant outdoors after all risk of frost has passed.
Plant out 30-40cm apart in full sun.
