Catnip or Catmint are the common names for a member of the mint family, Nepeta Cataria and gets its names for very good reasons.....most cats just love it!!!

The most intense catnip experience starts with the nose—a cat smelling the Catnip looks becomes happy and excited. [This is due to a chemical compound called nepalacatlone that the plant naturally releases when its leaves or stem are bruised. This chemical triggers the protein receptors within within the cat’s nose which then stimulate sensory neurons that lead to changes in brain activity.] Then when a cat nibbles on the Catnip, the opposite effect takes place - the cat mellows and chills out. This usually lasts about 10 minutes after which the cat loses interest....until the next time!
