Native to Australia, the plant produces masses of flowers in summer that resemble hummingbirds - perhaps an evolutionary trick to encourage native hummingbirds to come feed on its nectar.

Despite its Australian origins, this plant is relatively easy to grow in the UK  - either treated as an  annual in the border, or lifted / grown in pots and brought inside over winter.

Seed Germination

I have tested the germination of these seeds before offering for sale and tried several methods. Using the "boiling water" technique, I have had very good an quick results - see picture with the first seedlings up within a week.

  • Place seeds in a cup
  • Mentally note the original size of the seeds
  • Boil kettle
  • Pour the just boiled water over the seeds
  • Leave the seeds in the water for 24 hours
  • After 24 hours, remove the seeds that have swollen to  approx twice original size
  • Repeat the boiling water process for any seeds that have not swollen.
  • Sow seeds individually in a pots/tray of a well drained compost mix.
  • A mix of 50% sieved potting compost and 50% vermiculite/horticultural sand would be ideal
  • Compost should be moist but not wet
  • Place in warm place out of direct sunlight - circa 20C
  • No need to cover
  • Ensure compost does not dry out
  • Seedlings should appear in 1-2 weeks.
  • Pot on as required
  • Do not move/plant outside until after last frost risk passed.
  • Remember these plants are native to sand dunes so need well drained soil
