Please find for sale 50+ fresh Gorse seeds (Ulex Europaeus). Also known as Furze, gorse is a familiar sight out on the heathlands down here in the New Forest and also in other areas such as Dartmoor where livestock roams wild. It thrives because it is one of the few plants and bushes that the ponies and cattle will not eat unless they are absolutely desperate due to its thorns!

In gardens Gorse can be a really useful shrub. Firstly, it is one of the few plants that flowers right in the middle of winter with a huge profusion of bright yellow flowers (Gorse flowers are able to self-fertilise themselves without even opening so are able to clone themselves even if no insects around). Secondly, Gorse attracts an array of birds and insects - both for the flowers and also for the birds a secure place for nesting. Finally, Gorse makes a really useful  hedging option or a way to stop animals or people getting through. Gorse is so prickly, that collecting my seeds was probably not worth it, and any intruder would rather crawn naked through barbed wire than try and get through a gorse hedge!!

Germination Guide

  • Gorse seeds have very hard seed coats - place the seeds in a mug and then pour boiling water over them (this creates tiny cracks in the shell and allows water to penetrate to the embryo inside)
  • Allow to cool and soak for a day
  • Sow the seeds thinly and cover with about 5mm of the compost
  • Ensure the compost is kept moist but not wet
  • Keep at between 17-22c. 
  • Seeds should germinate within 3-4 weeks
  • Prick out and pot on as required
