Why Good King Henry:
  • Perennial & Low-Maintenance: As a perennial, it returns every year, requiring very little effort or upkeep. It is an "unfussy" plant that thrives on neglect and is generally untroubled by pests or disease.
  • Nutritious Early Harvest: It provides edible greens very early in the spring, often when few other vegetables are ready to harvest.
  • Versatile Culinary Uses:
    • Leaves: Young leaves are an excellent spinach substitute, enjoyed boiled or steamed.
    • Shoots: Young shoots, when gathered in spring, are a prized asparagus substitute, often called "poor-man's asparagus".
    • Flower Buds: Young, tender flower buds can be sautéed in butter
  • Sustainable and Adaptable: It adapts well to various soil types and is perfect for foraging-focused or cottage gardens

Please note: All our seeds are kept refrigerated in order to ensure they reach customers in the best possible condition.

Germination and Planting Guide

As a perennial Good King Henry can be tricky to germinate - the reward for the effort however is that once established it is incredibly easy and will give harvests year after year for minimal effort. It can either be sown in pots in Autumn, or alternatively it can be sown in the Spring.

The seed should be sown in a gritty compost and covered with about 1cm (1/4") of compost and left outside to allow the winter weather to break down the dormancy. The seeds will germinate naturally in Spring. For Spring sowings, the seed should only be lightly covered as it needs light to germinate. Germination could take weeks or months depending on the conditions and is naturally variable. Take care when planting out  - dislike root disturbance so either cut bottom off pot or ensure the contents come out in one piece as far as possible.
