In the UK this tree is also know as a Wellingtonia and there are some superb examples around such as the one next to Canford School's cricket pitch in Dorset - see final picture. As you may know, Giant Redwoods are the largest recorded trees in the world - up to 85 metres tall and 8 metres and they are also some of the oldest with many specimens being dated to well over 2,000 years old. Giant Redwoods can be successfully grown in most parts of the UK, making fine fast-growing feature trees. They are also very popular as container based bonsai specimens.

Germination Guide

• Sow indoors at any time of the year
• Place seeds in a zip lock freezer bag and immerse in tap water
• Hang the bag up for 24 hours at room temperature
• Prepare a seed tray filled with moist (but not wet) seed compost, lightly firmed down
• Ideal mix is 50% potting compost and 50% vermiculite/perlite
• Space seeds out on surface of the seed compost
• Very gently pat the seeds down so they are in contact with the compost
• Cover  with a thin layer of vermiculite or perlite
• Keep moist but not wet  - best to water from the bottom by having seeds tray inside a waterproof container.
• Keep at room temperature in a bright place eg on window sill over a radiator 
• Seedling should appear between 3 to 6 weeks
• Pot seedlings on once large enough to handle
