Growing Instructions

Most people just want lots of large, tasty onions but if you want to grow really big onions, perhaps for shows you need to put a fair bit of effort in but here are some top tips:

Sow the seeds in Mid/Late Winter
Sow in module trays and thin to one seedling per section
Plant out as soon as soil warm enough in early spring
Ideally use raised beds filled with rich moist compost

And for even bigger onions:

Cover raised bed with white plastic to warm soil and restrict weeds
Cut holes and plant seedlings
Ensure soil does not dry out
Apply liquid fertiliser twice weekly
