The Giant Himalayan Lily produces a long flowering spike of beautifully vanilla scented cream-white flowers, each with maroon markings in its deep throat.

Flowering between June and August, with as many as 40) individual flowers on each stalk.

Native to the the Himalayas this plant is fully hardy to the UK - technically this is not strictly true as the initial plant dies after flowering but it will have produced many offset bulbs at the the base of the old stem so new plants will appear again the next spring  - spreads by this method and also drops seeds. So for gardeners it is effectively a perennial as they will get plants and flowers every year,

Germination Guide:

For optimal and timely germination, these seeds require a period of cold stratification. Stratification is a process of simulating natural conditions that the seeds must experience before germination can occur (if a seed germinates in the middle of winter it will die). In the wild, seed dormancy is usually overcome by the seed spending time in the ground through a winter period and having its hard seed coat softened up by frost and weathering action. This cold, moist period triggers the seed's embryo; its growth and subsequent expansion eventually break through the softened seed coat in its search for sun and nutrients.

Soak seeds in a cup of water for 24 hours

Take a small amount of vermiculite or compost and place in a bowl

Soak with boiling water (to kill any bacteria) and allow to cool

Using a sieve, back or a spoon or similar, squeeze out the excess water so it is moist but not wet

Mix in the seed

Place the mix in a small sealable bag and squeeze out excess air

Label and place in the bottom of the fridge for 4-6 weeks - I put inside a tupperware box

After this stratification period spread the mix on a pot or tray of well-draining compost

Covered with a fine layer of sieved compost

Place in a warm, bright place (circa 17-22c) out of direct sunlight

Keep moist but not wet  - best to water from the bottom by having seeds tray inside a waterproof container.

Germination can be erratic should occur in 14-35 days depending on conditions

Thin seedlings and pot on as required.

Plant out once risk of last frost has passed

Alternatively, you can do this the natural way - sow the seeds in  a tray of well draining compost and leave it outside in the garden over winter to let nature take its course. You will want to cover the tray with a wire mesh or similar to keep out birds or next doors cat!
