Ethiopian Red Banana | Ensete Ventricosum | 5 seeds

Please find for sale 5 large Ensete Ventricosum seeds aka the Ethiopian Banana or the Abyssinian Red Banana. Although frost-tender this plant is fashionable as a bedding plant in Britain as it is extremely fast-growing and with its large red leaves looks stunning and exotic in the border and is very much a focal point.

At the of the season, small specimens can be dug up, put in pots and brought into a frost free place. Larger specimens can be cut down and the bases protected with thick layer of fleece.This is also a very popular and attractive houseplant due to its large glossy green leaves.

Germination Guide

• Lightly scarify (rub) the the seeds with sandpaper or a nail file
• Soak seeds in warm water for 48 hours
• Prepare a tray of moist well draining compost mix - ideally 50/50 mix of potting compost and vermiculite 
• Sow seeds individually 10cm approx deep and cover them.
• Ensure compost kep moist but not saturated
• Loosely cover with a clear plastic bag to aid humidity
• Place in a propagator or on a heat mat to maintain temperature of about 23-25c 
• Ensure compost does not dry out and remove bag/cover occasionally to maintain air quality
• Germination can be erratic - 2 to 8 weeks
• Pot on to individual pots once large enough to handle
