Yew is just about my favourite tree - versatile, long-lived, loved by wildlife, magical and mystical! Many old yews are found in churchyards, where their sacred status has protected them well for centuries - some were planted by Norman church-builders; others by Celtic Christians; and some predate Christianity, showing how the new religion supplanted older sacred sites. If you plant one today, it might outlive you by 1,000 years. Still to this day Yews hold a mystical presence - cremated ashes are still frequently scattered into hollow parts of yew tree trunks!

Seed Germination Guide
  • I have done the hard work! I have removed the very, very sticky flesh from the seeds!
  • The seeds require a cold period to break their natural dormancy
  • Mix the seeds with a free draining mix of moist compost in plastic bag or small tupperware container place the bag in the fridge for 10-12 weeks
  • After cold stratification or in early spring sow individually spaced in pots/trays of good quality compost (ideally 50% compost and vermiculite or horticultural sand.
  • Cover them with a thin layer of compost about 1cm deep
  • Germination can take 6-8 weeks at 15-20°c.
Note: Wash hands after handling yew seeds as they are toxic and will give you a bad tummy!
