Please find for sale 10+ fresh Musa Sikkimensis seeds aka "Darjeeling Banana". This fast growing banana cultivar is one of the most cold-tolerant bananas making it particularly useful for British gardens providing a stunning fast-growing feature plant for the back of the border. Loving partially shaded spots with moist rich soil, bananas (and Cannas) are a great way to create a truly tropical area in your garden. Although they are tropical plants, they are straightforward to over winter if you follow a few simple tips. This is also a very popular and attractive houseplant due to its large glossy green leaves and the fact that it does not need too much direct sunlight.

Gardener's World fans will know that bananas are one of Monty Don's favourite plants and their is lots of information out there on how best to grow these and over winter them in our climate - they are not fully frost hardy and they should be kept in greenhouses or conservatories until frost risk is passed or given adequate protection in situ.

Germination Guide

  • Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours
  • Prepare a tray of well draining compost mix - ideally 50/50 mix of potting compost and vermiculite
  • Sow seeds individually 2.5cm approx deep and cover them with the surrounding soil.
  • Ensure compost moist but not saturated
  • Loosely cover with a clear plastic bag to aid humidity
  • Place in a warm place (ideally 15-18c) our of direct sunlight
  • Dont worry if temperature falls at night eg if your heating goes off/down as this actually promotes banana seed germination
  • Germination can be erratic - some seedlings may emerge from 2/3 weeks but others may take longer
  • Pot on to individual pots once large enough to handle

Over Wintering Guide

Build up more loose soil over the roots and at the base of the trunk then add dry mulch. Wrap the trunk in multiple layers of horticultural fleece with a few old leaves in between to try to minimise contact between wet fleece and the trunk
