Crab apples are quite simple to grow from seed but they do require some prior cold stratification for optimum germination rates. Stratification is a process of simulating natural conditions that the seeds must experience before germination can occur (if a seed germinates in the middle of winter it will die). In the wild, seed dormancy is usually overcome by the seed spending time in the ground through a winter period and having its hard seed coat softened up by frost and weathering action. This cold, moist period triggers the seed's embryo; its growth and subsequent expansion eventually break through the softened seed coat in its search for sun and nutrients.

Stratification Guide

The seeds should be mixed with equal parts of peat-free compost. Moisten the mixture so that, when you squeeze a handful, only one or two drops of water escape between your knuckles. Place this mixture into a plastic bag and tie loosely. Put the bag into the vegetable compartment of the fridge. Leave in the fridge for about 2 weeks minimum.

Germination Guide

  • After stratification, sow seeds in pots or containers of well-draining compost mix - ideally 50/50 compost and vermiculite.
  • Sow the seeds thinly and cover with about 5mm of the compost
  • Ensure the compost is kept moist but not wet
  • Keep at between 17-22c.
  • Seeds should germinate within 2-3 weeks
  • Prick out and pot on as required
