Velvet Beans are a summer legume with the vines potentially reaching 12 to 15 feet in length. They can be grown in the same way as runner beans - will happily scamper up any frame or support.

Mucuna pruriens is a tropical legume native to Africa and tropical Asia and widely naturalized and cultivated. The seeds are been used widely in traditional medicine to for treating many dysfunctions not least as an established herbal drug used for the management of male infertility, nervous disorders, and also as an aphrodisiac. It has been shown that its seeds are potentially of substantial medicinal importance. The ancient Indian medical system, Ayurveda, traditionally uses M. pruriens, even to treat such things as Parkinson's disease. 


Sowing Guide

Outdoor

1) Plant seeds directly outside 3cm deep once risk of frost has passed and soil has warmed up - same time as would plant French Beans

2) Use a framework or bamboo, sticks or other similar structure for the vines to climb up - as per runner beans

3) Soil should be rich with plenty of well rotted material

Indoor

1) Sow seeds in individual 9cm pots indoor around March (depending on where you are in UK)

2) Use regular potting compost, moist but not wet

3) Sow seeds 3cm deep 

4)  Place the pots in a warm area out of bright light eg on a window sill but out of direct sun 

5) Seeds should germinate in 7-10 days

5) Plant outside once risk of frost passed and soil warmed up
