Couldn't load pickup availability
Please find for sale 5 fresh Fagus Sylvatica Atropurpure seeds, better known as Copper Beech or Purple Beech. There are few more stunning sights than this tree however as this is a cultivar from common beech, it does not seem to set seed very often - and round my way in the New Forest where the soils are poor, the seeds that I do find are not good. The seeds for sale come from the North of England and are by far the best I have found (see picture with coin) - so plump that they have to go "Large Letter" which alas adds to the cost.
INSTRUCTIONS - TO SAVE PAPER I NO LONGER SEND OUT WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS TO CUSTOMERS.
INSTRUCTIONS ARE BELOW SO PLEASE BOOKMARK THIS PAGE.
Germination Guide
Beech seeds require a period of "cold stratification" to replicate nature's way of stopping seedlings sprouting in the middle of winter.
- Soak seeds in water for 24 hours.
- Drain away the water and mix the seeds with some moist (but not wet) compost.
- Place mix in a zip-lock freezer bag.
- Place the seeds in the fridge
- Check weekly to see if any seeds germinated - remove and pot up any that have
- After 4-6 weeks the seeds are ready to be sown.
- Pot up in deep pots (Beech has a long tap root) that has drainage holes with a good quality compost
- Gently water and keep them at room temperature.
- Ensure compost does not dry out - best have in a tray and water from the bottom so water soaks up
