Cloudberry (Rubus Chamaemorus) | 6 seeds | Rare | Superfruit
Please find for sale 6 fresh and very rare Cloudberry seeds (Rubus Chamaemorus). Also known by a host of other names - nordic berry, bakeapple knotberry and knoutberry aqpik, averin or evron.
You have probably never heard of this rare and delicious (tastes like baked apples) but I first encountered this berry when working in Sweden where is is extremely popular and used to make fine jams. If you want to try it, Ikea UK sell Cloudberry jam which is called "Sylt Hjortron".
In actual fact Cloudberry is also native to the UK - primarily the Scottish Highlands and parts of northern England. This plant requires very specific conditions to grow well - basically it is a bog plant so it will grow well where Cranberries and Lingonberries grow - acidic waterlogged soil in full sun. Here in the New Forest on the South Coast, it is much warmer but still possible as these conditions do exist - I have found a way to grow cranberries by observing the conditions in which sundews grow - boggy horse foot imprints and recreating these conditions on my allotment. I will add cloudberries this year.

Germination Guide
Cloudberrys, as they are native to areas that get very cold winters require for optimum germination rates a period of “cold stratification” to break the natural dormancy in the seed. In nature, this stops the seed germinating in Autumn and being killed by winter frosts.
To cold stratify the seeds either:
- a) Place seeds along with some slightly damp (with rainwater) sphagnum moss in a zip lock bag and store in a cold shed or outbuilding for 6 weeks or so (during winter only)
or
- b) Place seeds along with some slightly damp (with rainwater) sphagnummoss in a zip lock bag and store at bottom of a refrigerator for 6 weeks. (Any time of year)
- After stratification, sow them in a well-drained and sieved mix of good quality ericaceous compost and vermiculite
- Lightly cover with sieved ericaceous compost
- Soil mixture should be moist but not wet with rainwater
- Keep at 20c approx. and ensure compost does not dry out – having seeds tray inside a water tight tray and watering from the bottom works best.
- Seedlings should appear after 8-10 weeks.
