If you are a cat lover, you will almost certainly know about Catnip! This easy to grow herb contains an essential oil called Nepetalactone. The smell and taste of this oil excite even the laziest of cats. Catnip sensitivity is hereditary—some cats cats have no reaction. The most intense catnip experience starts with smell - catnip targets feline happy receptors in the brain. The opposite is then true when the cat nibbles on Catnip producing a mellowing effect.Usually a cat will enjoy about a 15 minute catnip "session", after which it loses interest. 

Catnip isn't just for cats, it's been grown in medicinal gardens for centuries for its sedative effect on humans. Made into a tea, catnip has calming properties similar to chamomile. Concentrated nepetalactone also makes for a powerful mosquito repellent.

Germination Instructions:

  • Place seeds in the freezer for a day or so
  • Then place seeds in a bowl of water for 24 hours
  • Sow seeds on a tray of moist compost
  • Press seeds gently into surface to ensure a good contact
  • Cover with about 0.5cm of sieved compost.
  • Keep in a warm light place
  • Germination should take place within 2 weeks.
  • Thin plants as required
  • Plants can be grown ion pots, trays or planted outside
