Sowing Guide
Capers have a bit of reputation for being tricky to germinate as two stages (both scarification and stratification) are required but in reality not that hard if the steps are followed.
Scarification - very gently rub the seeds between two pieces of sandpaper
Soak the seeds in warm water for 2 to 3 days, changing the water if it becomes cloudy
Stratify - place the seeds on a damp paper towel and seal in a small grip seal bag or plastic box and place in the fridge for 4-8 weeks to simulate winter
Sow the seeds in a pot of well-draining seed compost mix with added grit.
Keep pot at 18-21C using a hat mat if required
Germination can be naturally erratic and can take from a few weeks to several months
