Please find for sale 30+ fresh Box seeds (Buxus Sempervirens). Despite the best efforts of Lancelot Capability Brown and the Box Tree Caterpillar, Common Box remains massively popular in the UK. Deservedly so as well as it is incredibly versatile - aside from its traditional use for formal hedging, it can be used for all sorts of topiary as well as being a fine container specimen.

Whilst growing box from seed is not a quick fix, it is not difficult and will save considerable sums compared with buying established plants.

Germination Guide

Common Box seeds require a modest amount of "stratification" to make for maximum germination. In a nutshell stratification is a technique used by gardeners to trick seeds into thinking winter has passed and its time to sprout! Most cold climate seeds from the Northern Hemisphere require this  - if an acorn was to sprout in October, it would be killed by the frost in winter.

  • Sow indoors at any time of year.
  • Soak seed for 24 hours in warm water. Drain water.
  • Prepare a small amount of compost mix - ideally 50% compost and 50% vermiculite (which I have for sale in my shop)
  • Ensure compost mix is moist but not wet
  • Mix in the box seeds  and place in a freezer-type bag and cold stratify at the bottom of the fridge for 4 weeks
  • Remove bag from fridge and add spread over  a tray of good quality compost mix
  • Add a few millimetres of sieved compost or vermiculite over the seeds
  • Place in a bright location about 16-20c but out of direct sunlight
  • Do not allow temperature to rise above 25c
  • Do not allow compost to dry out
  • Germination should take 2-4 weeks
  • Pot on once large enough to handle
