Native to Mauritius, it is called a bottle palm in a mistaken understanding that the bulging trunk is used to store water.This palm is not frost-hardy so here in the UK it is used as a very attractive house or conservatory plant.

Germination Guide
- Light scarify a part of the seed surface with a nail file or similar
- Soak the seeds in a cup warm water.
- Keep the cup in a warm pace eg on a radiator or in airing cupboard etc for 24 hours
- Wash in clean water
- Prepare a compost mix - Ideally a mix of 50% regular compost, 50% vermiculite
- Place mix in suitable bowl and microwave on full power for 2 minutes to kill and fungi/bacteria
- All soil mix to cool naturally
- Place mix into clean seed trays or pots
- Plant seeds so that about a third of the seed is visible out the top of the compost mix
- Humidify the soil but do not over water to prevent mould.
- Keep warm in a warm place 20-29c in a light place but out of direct sunlight.
- Germination will take place in 4-6 weeks
