Also known as the glossy-leaf paper plant, fatsi, paperplant, false castor oil plant, or Japanese aralia, this is an easy and fast growing plant providing year round interest. It is very popular as a house plant due to its lovely glossy leaves and when grown outside produces profuse amounts of berries over late winter - just when the birds need them!It is also a very successful shade-tolerant garden plant with its large glossy leaves. Best grown in heavy rich soil against a sheltered wall (hard frost can injure the leaves but plants will recover if the roots are protected).

Seed Germination

• Soak seeds in tap water for 24 hours
• Prepare a well draining compost mix - ideally 50% compost and 50% vermiculite
• Ensure compost mix is damp but not wet
• Place compost mix in seed tray or pots
• Sow seeds individually about 3mm deep,
• Cover with compost mixCover with a clear plastic bag with a few air holes to maintain humidity 
• Bottom heat required for optimal germination rates/time (about 22c-27c) so use a heat mat if you have one
• Place is a bright spot but out of direct sunlight
• Ensure compost mix does not dry out - mist with water as required.
• Seedlings can appear from 2-8 weeks depending on conditions
• Pot on as required once seedlings sufficiently developed
