Aquilegia require very little attention and are not fussy about their growing conditions and are very easy to grow. Aquilegia tend to self seed, and if you do not want them popping up where they are not wanted, it's best to remove the seed heads. In common with some Hellebores, the flower heads hang down, which can make it difficult to see the delicate beauty of the flowers. Although the foliage on Aquilegia fades and dies back, they are not a true herbaceous perennial, as they do not die back completely to bare earth in the winter. 

Germination Guide 
  • Sow in UK from December to April
  • Use seed trays of moist well-draining compost mix - Ideally a mix of  50% regular compost, 50% vermiculite (which I sell in the Accessories section of my eBay shop)
  • Sow seeds pressing lightly into (but not under) the surface
  • Do not cover - seeds require light for germination
  • Place tray in unheated greenhouse or shed by the window (the seeds require a period of cold for optimum germination)
  • Germination usually takes 25-50 days depending on conditions.
  • Thin seedlings to stop them getting leggy
  • Plant out in final position once risk of frost has passed

TOP TIP! Don't use all your seeds in the same tray just in case rot sets in.
